A bit of history for our young contemporary television « spectators ». When radio broadcasting emerged in the early 20th century, people needed a way to describe how voices and music could travel invisibly through space. The “aether” became a poetic stand-in for the invisible space carrying radio signals, for “the airwaves”, which is still widely used for radio/TV transmission.
